1 June 2009
World No. 25 Robin Soderling is the shock participant in this year's French Open quarter-finals, after defeating and dethroning reigning four-time champion and World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in a four-set fourth round upset.
The 24-year-old Swede had only previously made it as far as the third round at Roland Garros (in 2008), suffering first round defeats in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and a second round defeat in 2005.
Furthermore, the 23rd seed had previously given no indication of his huge triumph to come, falling in the second round at the ATP Madrid to Roger Federer and in the third round at Rome to none other than Rafael Nadal in a 6-1 6-0 thrashing.
However, Soderling has shown form at Roland Garros that has definitely made him deserving of his place in the final eight, posting a very impressive four set victory over World No. 14 David Ferrer in the third round, prior to his huge victory over Nadal.

World No. 11 Nikolay Davydenko is no stranger to success at the French Open, reaching the semi-finals in 2005 and 2007, as well as the quarter-finals in 2006.
The 27-year-old Russian has also put in some impressive performances that have made him a worthy quarter-finalist, upsetting 8th seed Fernando Verdasco in the fourth round in straight sets, and defeating 17th seed Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets in the third round.
Best Nikolay Davydenko Odds for Online Betting: Bet on Nikolay Davydenko to win at 1.53 from |
The two players have met five times so far, with Robin Soderling holding a 3-2 lead in the meetings. Interestingly, two of these victories for Soderling have taken place on clay, with both ending in upset victories for the Swede.
However, with Nikolai Davydenko holding both a superior record on clay and a higher world ranking, the Russian naturally enters this meeting as the favourite.
But with Robin Soderling on a high after defeating Nadal and showing some brilliant form on the clay this week, another exciting upset may be in store at Roland Garros in this quarter final meeting.
Prediction: Robin Soderling in five sets
