Liverpool struggled in their opening Champions League football match against lowly Debrecen of Hungary.

The Merseysiders were huge favourites entering the match, but wasteful finishing and a general nonchalant attitude plagued Rafa Benitez’s men.

The Reds did thoroughly dominate the match, but the 1-0 scoreline always leaves the game within reach of even the weakest of opponents.

Saturday’s 6-1 thumping of Hull gives an indication of what Liverpool are capable of achieving when they are in the mood, and they will have to be up for the challenge against a strong defensive side like Fiortentina if they have any plans to take the three points.

Fiorentina look to grab their first points in group E on Tuesday night when they host Liverpool.

After losing 1-0 to Lyon on the first matchday, the Viola will look to turn things around against a strong Liverpool side.

Fiorentina’s domestic form has been sensational in the opening weeks of the 2009/10 season, as they currently sit fourth, only two points adrift of current leaders Sampdoria.

Cesare Prandelli will be over the moon with the recent defensive displays his team have put in, keeping a clean sheet in four of the first six Serie A matches.

Fiorentina will have to be sharp against a strong Liverpool, but with Adrian Mutu and Alberto Gilardino in attack, Prandelli has himself a pair of lethal strikers.

The two teams have not met before so there are no Fiorentina vs Liverpool records, but Fiorentina hold an extremely positive home record against English clubs, having won two, drawn one, and lost none. Fiorentina have also yet to concede a goal to an English club on home soil.

Liverpool's recent away record against Italian clubs is also impressive, having won two and drawn two of the last four such matches, with the Reds keeping a clean sheet in each one as well.

Liverpool have the advantage of three points in the bag and could be satisfied with a draw. On the other hand, a win would set them well on their way to qualifying for the knockout stage.

Fiorentina, on the other hand, cannot afford to lose another match after their opening day defeat to Lyon. Defence will likely be prioritised by both clubs in what looks to be a tightly contested affair.
