Carlo Ancelotti has enjoyed a successful start at Chelsea, but he will likely want to forget Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Wigan as quickly as possible.

Yuri Zhirkov could be in line to start against Apoel after a spot on the bench against Wigan. The Russian wingback is yet to make an appearance for Chelsea following his transfer from CSKA Moscow this summer due to a knee injury.

Apoel Nicosia welcome Chelsea to Cyprus after a phenomenal 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid in their first game in the Champions League.

The Cypriots were pinned back for most of the match, though sturdy defending and a pinch of good fortune were enough to clinch a well earned point.

Apoel will face a difficult challenge in the Champions League, but after Anorthosis Famagusta reached the group stage of the Champions League, there is reason to believe that football on the island of Cyprus is really on the move.

A lot of the success must be credited to the large number of foreign players in the league. Apoel Nicosia have all of 15 foreign players, none perhaps more important than the Portuguese midfield duo of Helio Pinto and Nuno Morais.

Prediction

This will be the first time that the two sides have met, with this 2009/10 Champions League season being Apoel Nicosia's first.

Apoel will feel confident after a good result against Atletico Madrid, but to claim anything from this fixture would be quite difficult.

Chelsea should come in hungry, and even more keen to get a result in the face of their disappointing weekend result in the Premier League.
