Manchester United enter this Carling Cup fixture after a dramatic injury-time goal from Michael Owen sealed a 4-3 victory over Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

The controversial win sent Man Utd to second on the table, trailing leaders Chelsea by three points after six matches played.

Michael Owen is largely expected to start for Man Utd after his crucial substitution role in the Derby win. Sir Alex Ferguson will likely make a number of changes to his side, with the likes of Wes Brown and Tomasz Kuszczak tipped to play for Man United.

 

Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton Wanderers come into this clash with Man Utd after an impressive 2-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday.

The win is the Wolves first at home this season, and second overall, as they have begun their Premier League campaign in a generally positive note, with seven points from their first six matches. They currently sit 12th in the league, equal on points with 11th placed Birmingham.

Both Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Michael Kightly could start for Wolves after making a successful return from injury on Sunday, whilst Mick McCarthy may also choose to give Stefan Maierhofer his full debut after two substitute appearances.

Prediction

These two teams last met in the 2003/04 Premier League season, with Wolves beating United 1-0 at home, whilst the reverse fixture at Old Trafford saw Man U win with the same scoreline.

In fact, Wolves have not beaten, nor scored against United at Old Trafford, since 1980 back in the English Divison One. This does not bode well for Wolverhampton, who have only progressed past this round once in the past twelve years.

Man United will likely rest some key players for this fixture, but should still have the depth and quality to post a convincing win over Wolves tonight.
