Newly promoted Livorno are expected to face a real battle to stay afloat in the Serie A this season, and if first indications are to be trusted, it’s a battle they most likely will not win.

After two games played, Livorno are still searching for their first victory and have scored only once, in a 3-1 defeat away against Napoli.

Vittorio Russo has done his best to piece together a team capable of competing in the Serie A and has resorted to loaning seven players in order to bring in a fresh look.

The return of Cristiano Lucarelli gives Russo a decent striking option, although the lack of depth at other positions has already been apparent in the young season.

Mozart, who enjoyed a successful spell at Spartak Moscow before falling out of favour, is an interesting signing in midfield. If he could return to the form of old, he could provide a spark for Russo in midfield.

AC Milan will look to rebound after an extremely disappointing 4-0 derby defeat against Inter.

After twenty minutes of competitive football, Milan totally collapsed and gifted the match to Inter. Even without Gattuso being sent off in the 40th minute for his second bookable offence, Milan were already showing signs of self destructing.

The midfield looked sluggish, they lacked creativity coming forward, the defence was always a step behind. In general, every area of the pitch could, and will need to be, improved if Milan are to right the ship.

Milan’s pre-season form indicated that something like this might happen early in the season, but pre-season matches don’t always provide the best indication of how a team will come out and perform.

Now, after a very poor result in a competitive match, new manager Leonardo will have to find a way to light a fire under his team in order to get them on track.

Pato, who had looked sharp in the opening match of the season when he scored a brace against Siena, will need to become more involved again. Ronaldinho’s misplaced passes will need to start finding the right address. Someone will have to take charge in the absence of the departed Kaká.

Marco Borriello could be dropped in favour of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar or Filippo Inzaghi, as he was largely ineffective against Inter, while Clarence Seedorf will likely return in midfield in place of the suspended Gattuso.

Prediction

During the 2007/08 season, the last time Livorno was in the Serie A, they drew the away match and lost their home fixture 4-1 in the Milan vs Livorno meetings.

Milan are without question the stronger side, but given their current run of form, anything can happen. They could respond well after the loss to Inter and come out playing flowing football, but they could just as easily come out flat and lacking inspiration.
