After a lacklustre performance in the opening match of the 2009/10 season, Inter Milan put on a clinic en route to an easy 4-0 victory over AC Milan in the derby.

After a less than convincing 1-1 draw at home against Bari on opening day, Jose Mourinho’s men found an extra gear to embarrass Milan.

Wesley Sneijder’s arrival from Real Madrid was a welcomed sight for Mourinho as his midfield, which had failed to contain Bari only a week prior, was able to bury Milan in their wake.

Diego Milito scored his first goal for the club from the spot after Gennaro Gattuso’s clumsy challenge on Samuel Eto’o, as Maicon, Dejan Stankovic and Thiago Motta also added goals.

Lucio’s command in defence was inspiring and the performance as a whole leaves little doubt that Inter have the necessary tools to repeat as champions.

Mourinho will be without the service of Cambiasso ahead of Sunday’s match and may elect to rotate in preparation of next week’s Champions League match with Barcelona.

Parma

Parma have marked their return to the Serie A in fashion, as Francesco Guidolin’s side have taken four points from the opening two matches of the 2009/10 season.

Parma won their opening day match against Catania 2-1 and followed it up with another impressive performance in a 2-2 away draw against Udinese.

19 year-old striker, Alberto Paloschi, has already started turning heads after goals in each of his first two Serie A matches for Parma.

Guidolin has shopped smartly over the summer and managed to bring in Christian Panucci after his contract with AS Roma ran out. Guidolin has also brought in Valeri Bojinov as one of six players to join the club on loan deals.

Well-travelled Nicolas Amoruso will be looking to re-establish himself as a striker at the club, but will face tough competition to see time in attack.

Everything that is going on at the club at present is exciting. This could potentially be the year that puts Parma back on the map!

Prediction

As far as Inter vs Parma meetings go, Inter won both meetings between the clubs in the 2007/08 season, the last time Parma was competing in the Serie A. There is not much remaining of the 2007/08 Parma squad, although history does favour Inter.

Of the last sixteen matches played between the clubs at the Giuseppi Meazza Stadium, Inter have lost only once.

Parma have the potential to be this season’s Genoa. While it’s likely that the beginning of the season will see mixed results (occasionally fantastic, occasionally disgraceful), when they hit form, they will give even the biggest clubs a scare.

Christian Panucci is an excellent signing and will provide a leadership role in nursing the younger talents along, while Guidolin has given himself a good set of options without overly spending.

Still, Inter are likely to dictate proceedings on Sunday.
