Espanyol take on Real Madrid after a 1-0 opening day defeat away against Athletic Bilbao.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men owned the majority of possession against Bilbao but lacked the cutting edge to beat Gorka Iraizoz in net for Bilbao.

Pochettino will be hoping that his men put in a more inspired match against Real Madrid, although the opposition will be of world class.

Espanyol will hope to keep Raul Tamudo healthy for an entire season as the team possesses an entirely different attacking dimension with him on the pitch. Tamudo has a proven goal scoring record for Espanyol, but has missed far too many matches for the club from Barcelona over the past few seasons.

Shunsuke Nakamura will be looking to impress on his home debut for Espanyol. Nakamura joined Espanyol on a free transfer this summer after a successful four year stint with Celtic. He and Luis Garcia will be key figures on the wings for Pochettino.

The tragic death of captain Daniel Jarque has been an emotional hurdle for Espanyol players to deal with over the last month. Jarque, 26, died of a heart attack on August 8. His loss could fuel an inspired effort in the home opener.

Real Madrid enter the match with Espanyol after a rather average encounter with Deportivo La Coruna.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men emerged victorious after goals from Raul, record signing Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lassana Diarra, but the Merengues were made to work for their three points.

Twice, Deportivo were able to equalise after going down, only to have Diarra’s goal settle the points.

Los Blancos showed flashes of brilliance in the match but looked complacent at times. The balance of the star-studded team has come under question recently with the host of offensive-minded players leaving the back line susceptible to the counter attack.

Nevertheless, with a list of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká, Raul, Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy returning from injury, Pellegrino will know that his team is not only expected to win, but to win with overwhelming style.

Prediction

Last season's Real Madrid vs Espanyol meetings saw Real Madrid win away at the Estadio Olimpico de Montjuic 2-0 after second half goals from Guti and Raul, however, Los Blancos could only manage a 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.

This matchup has been a tight affair in recent years as Espanyol have won six of the past fifteen matches between the sides, drawing twice and losing seven.

Espanyol will likely come out inspired, dedicating the match to Jarque, and if Real Madrid are not careful they could find themselves in a tough position.
