The French Open is the only Grand Slam Title that has escaped World No. 2 Roger Federer's grasp so far in his illustrious career, with three Australian Open, five Wimbledon and five US Open titles under his belt, or rather, his racquet.
With arch-rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic out of Roland Garros in extraordinary fashion, former World No.1 Federer now holds his greatest chance to date — if not his greatest chance ever — of capturing the elusive Roland Garros crown.
But whether the 27-year-old can find the form necessary to conquer the clay surface remains to be seen.
Federer has had anything but a smooth ride to his fifth consecutive semi-final appearance in Paris, with two four-set, closer-than-expected encounters followed by a gripping five-set match against Tommy Haas, where Federer had to come back from two sets to love down to secure a nerve-wracking victory.
Before Federer can even contemplate further Grand Slam glory, he will first have to overcome home-grown hero and 11th seed, Gael Monfils.

With fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eliminated by Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round, world no. 10 Gael Monfils is the French's last hope of securing a home victory at Roland Garros.
The 22-year-old has shown good form in Paris so far, defeating sixth seed Andy Roddick with a convincing 6-4 6-2 6-3 scoreline to book this showdown with Roger Federer.
With recent months plagued by injury, Gael Monfils will be hoping to repeat last year's performance, where he reached the semi-finals here at Roland Garros in brilliant fashion. What Monfils will want to forget from last year, however, is that defeat in the semis came at the hands of none other than Roger Federer.
Best Gael Monfils Odds for Online Betting: Bet on Gael Monfils to win at 4 from |
Federer holds a convincing 4-0 record against Monfils, with their last meeting taking place in the aforementioned 2008 French Open semi-finals, where the Fed Express was victorious in four sets.
His victory over Tommy Haas may not have inspired the Swiss champion with much confidence, but the former World No. 1 will likely put the close result behind him and focus on, at the very least, reaching the final and mounting a challenge for the title.
Federer cannot afford any slip-ups against Monfils, and a two set deficit against the Frenchman would likely prove fatal for The Fed and his title chances.
If Roger Federer can find his best form in this match, then victory should be assured for the World No. 2. But anything less, and a massive Monfils upset would definitely not be out of the question in this repeat of last year's semi-final.
Prediction: Federer in four sets
